Today, we continue our discussion of the possible existence of individual souls, the Master Within, the Inner Self, and a Divine World.
Pre-Existent Soul:
It is likely that the most commonly held belief systems are theological in content. That is, these systems postulate the existence of nonphysical worlds and entities. Such entities are comprised of various combinations of a single, Supreme Deity, sets of specific deities, djinn, angels, demons, elementals, enlightened discarnate masters, mythological creatures, and whatever other being has been experienced in a sleeping dream state. Heavenly and hellish realms are commonly populated by deceased human beings (eternally or temporarily).
A major separation exists between theological dogmas postulating a single physical experience (the Occidental Revealed Religions of the Book) versus those dogmas postulating reincarnation through the physical and other worlds.
The first dogma generally associated with a Supreme Deity providing individual souls with an opportunity to intentionally follow a life of altruism versus a life of self-aggrandizement and hoarding. The compliant group spends eternity in the heavenly realms and the later in the hellish realms. Such theological dogmas deny purification or refinement of individual souls.
The second dogma postulates that single lifetimes fail to provide sufficient educational opportunities for nascent souls to refine and evolve themselves so to better emulate the Qualia of God. Therefore, individual souls are provided with as many lifetimes as needed which come about under the Law of Karma. The goal of such theological systems is the eventual rehabilitation of all souls and the granting of eternal, liberated life. One good example is Luria Kabbalah.
Naturally, many different subsets exist and are followed. Regardless, the validity of a religion is poorly judged based upon the number of worldwide adherents. It must be judged by (1) the lifestyles lived by such adherents and their interactions with others, human and animal, and (2) the depth of their understanding of the spiritual and the mundane laws.
A much more grave problem is that proponents of such systems generally “believe under authority” and not as the result of serious internal observation of their psyches and dreams. Subsequently, as they lack accurate knowledge of whether or not they possess a divine soul, they are not in any better position than the nihilists and humanists. Moreover, they are easily duped by false prophets and political leaders and easily commit the worst atrocities in the name of their authoritative God.
Personally, I find the concept of a Supreme Deity providing divine, innate, pre-existent individual souls to human creatures most irrational. First, as most theological systems consider their God to be prefect, compassionate, all understanding, absolutely pure, desiring to bestow Love and Goodness on Its creatures, Eternal, and Infinite in toto, every division of God’s Essence, regardless of size, must retain such Divine Qualities. In other words, it cannot be corrupted for it is already Prefect and Complete.
Therefore, the Occidental stories of mankind’s Fall from Grace are greatly misunderstood by all, but the most enlightened Beings. That a Fall occurred is most reasonable, but the reason is not understood.
Second, biological evolution has produced an amazing self-cognitive creature over billions of years, but one endowed with primeval desires for security, food, and carnal pleasure rather than equally strong altruism. Our living situation is so deadly that very few persons will succeed–as taught by the Buddha.
Subsequently, after many years of deep thought and exploration of my own psyche, I must reject the concept of a pre-existent soul and monad of God as untenable, irrational, and inconsistent with exploration of our own dream worlds. Rather, I find the concept of a Soul-Seed, intimately connected to our persona structures (our human Personality) and which is innate to human beings (gift from the Divine) is much more tenable. I discuss this idea tomorrow.
