The Greek Sophist, Protagoras (d. 411 BCE) taught that man is the measure of all things.
I opine that it is more accurate to hold that man is the measurer of all things.
Why? Because it is mankind itself who creates society and its rules; who judges so to reward or punish; who formulates sacred images to fear, appease, and worship; and so on. Whether we are inspired by the formless is an open question.
Therefore, we need to look into our collective mind to solve our species deficiencies rather than appeal to our man made deities. Though, being open to our intuition is beneficial.
